Exploring the Depths of Tarot:
Jean Michell-David is a seasoned international scholar and presenter on the origins of Tarot and is known for his profound insights and extensive research into its historical origins. With a focus on his book, "Reading the Marseille Tarot,” Jean Michell delves deep into the complexities and nuances of this ancient art form.
This fluid and dynamic conversation delves into many aspects of the tarot including its astrological, theological and kabbalistic influences. We also discuss the potential for Greek and Egyptian influences.
Much of the discussion centres around the fact that the Tarot was not originally conceived as a predictive tool; instead, it served as a source of wisdom, insight, moral guidance, and reflection. Jean Michell discusses several esoteric concepts referred to by Steiner and others about the great spiritual cycles which manifest in different impulses in the collective consciousness which also coincide with the historical evolution of tarot.
Jean Michell explains how the modern interest began in the 1960s with the use of the Riders deck.
While many in the Western world regard the Tarot primarily as a tool for fortune telling I learned from Jean Michell that this perception is just the tip of the iceberg. The Tarot offers much more than I had previously understood.
The Tarot traces its modern origins back to the 15th century. I was fascinated by the story of how it had evolved over the centuries and the influences of various mystery schools including the Golden Dawn, Rosicrucians, Freemasons, and the changes incorporated for the purposes of a Spanish Jewish society that were gathering on the sabbath during a phase when jews were being persecuted in Spanish history.
As a complete novice about the deeper aspects of the tarot I found that Jean Michell’s explanation of how and when the 22 Major Arcana cards were added to the original 56 deck to be intriguing.
The major arcana cards represent significant archetypal figures and universal themes present throughout human experience. From "The Fool," symbolizing new beginnings and spontaneous energy, to "The World," representing completion and fulfillment, these cards resonate at deep psychological levels.
In conclusion, my conversation with Jean Michell-David will help illuminate the rich history and intricate layers of the Tarot. Tarot offers a profound means of self-exploration, personal empowerment, and spiritual growth.
